Sustainability & the Future of Footwear: Interview with TOCCO EARTH

I recently had the opportunity to share some of my work and thoughts about the footwear industry moving forward regarding additive manufacturing and innovative materials.

The article explores innovations in 3D printing and biomaterials for footwear, focusing on my sustainable designs:


  1. CPT_1:

    • Uses Stratasys PolyJet technology and Agilus 30 material.

    • Features enhanced durability and flexibility, reducing failure points and enabling easy cleaning compared to traditional shoes.

    • Allows for intricate, multi-colored designs.

  2. O°BLOOM:

    • Inspired by natural mycelium patterns.

    • Uses PHAs (polyhydroxyalkanoates), a fully biodegradable polymer, offering superior sustainability and flexibility over TPU.

    • Combines circular knitting with hot spraying for seamless, glueless construction.

  3. Lifecycle Design:

    • Tackles biodegradability and wear challenges, emphasizing consumer responsibility in managing product lifespans.

  4. TENDON:

    • Mimics foot anatomy, offering biomimetic solutions for natural movement and strengthening foot muscles.

    • Blends clay sculpting with digital modeling for fit and comfort optimization.

  5. Emerging Techniques:

    • Highlights Rapid Liquid Printing (RLP) for geometric freedom and material versatility.

    • Mentions Carbon 3D's EPU Pro for advanced cushioning, strength, and possible barefoot comfort.


The overarching theme is leveraging nature-inspired designs and additive manufacturing to create innovative, sustainable footwear solutions.


Conceptually I am at the forefront of integrating biomaterials and 3D printing to develop biodegradable footwear inspired by natural forms, particularly mycelium structures. These innovative designs utilize polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), a type of biodegradable plastic, to achieve both aesthetic appeal and environmental sustainability. This approach not only reduces waste but also offers new design possibilities in the footwear industry.
